Each year in the fall there is a grand celebration of thanksgiving in Benin City. During this celebration the Oba (king) of Benin performs as part of the celebration. You can see the joyful expression on what is generally a very sober Oba's face.
Notice the tremendous amount of detail in the face, clothing, and beadwork. The traditional Oba wears costly and rare beads made of coral, amber, and other precious materials.
Cast using the lost wax method each piece is completely unique, as the detail of each work is lost completely when the wax is melted off.
This wonderful piece stands 7.5 inches tall, and weighs just under 2 pounds.
